Born Aug. 21, 1896, in Chelsea, Iowa; son of Nicholas and Rosa Sell. Enlisted April 8, 1917, from Iowa State College at Ames; entered Ft. Logan; first entered Co. F, 2nd Regt,. Engineers, 2nd Bn. In France Oct. 16; member of Co. F, 2nd Regt., 2nd Div. In battles of Verdun and Chateau Thierry. Killed in action on June 12, 1918, in Belleau Woods.
