USS Tenadores, a 10,000 ton (displacement) troop transport, was built in 1913 at Belfast, Ireland, for the United Fruit Company of New York as the 7782 gross ton passenger-cargo steamer of the same name. She was taken over by the Navy in April 1918 and placed in commission at that time. During the rest of World War I she was employed taking American troops across the Atlantic to the European war zone. Following the 11 November 1918 Armistice she reversed the flow, bringing home more than 1600 veterans of the "Great War". On 28 December 1918, while approaching Brest, France after a voyage from New York, Tenadores ran aground in a fog. Though all on board were rescued, the ship could not be saved and was soon broken up by the sea.
