Fifth Regiment, Marines

TIME AND PLACE OF ORGANIZATION:
The 5th Regiment, United States Marine Corps, was organized during the latter part of May and the first of June, 1917. The Headquarters Company, Supply Company, Second and Third Battalions were organized at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and the Third Battalion at Quantico.

SUB-DIVISIONS:
The composition of the Battalions was as follows:

1st Battalion — 17, 49, 66, 67. (A, B, C, D)
2nd Battalion — 18, 43, 51, 55. (E, F, G, H)
3rd Battalion — 16, 20, 45, 47. (I, K, L, M)

Names of Commanding Officers.
The late Brigader General (then Colonel) Charles A. Doyen, from time of organization until November 1st, 1917.
Colonel (then Lieut-Colonel) Hiram I. Bearss, from then until January 1st, 1918.
Brigadier General (then Colonel) Wendell C. Neville, from January 1st, 1918 to July 17th, 1918.
Brigadier General (then Colonel) Logan Feland, from July 17th, 1918 to March 21st, 1919.
Colonel Harold C. Snyder, from March 21st, 1919 to present date.

Date of Arrival in France.
1st Battalion: June 26th, 1917 on "U. S. S. De Kalb."
2nd and 3rd Battalions: June 27th, 1917, on "U. S. S. Henderson."
Headquarters and Supply Companies: July 2nd, 1917, on "U. S.S. Hancock."

Training Periods.
July 17th, 1917, to September 23rd, 1917, at Menancourt [sic. Menaucourt] and Naix, France. At this time the Regiment was attached to the 1st Division.
September 23rd, 1917, to March 13th, 1918, at Breuvannes and Damblain.
The Third Battalion which had been doing guard duty at St. Nazaire rejoined the regiment on January 10th, 1918, and trained at Colombey.

Verdun Sector.
Les Eparges Sector (Sub-sector Montgrimont) March 17th, 1918 to March 27th, 1918.
Verdun Sector (Sub-sector Eix - Moulaincourt - Chatillon) March 31st, 1918, to May 12th, 1918.

Aisne-Marne Defensive (Chateau Thierry).
May 20th to May 31st 1918.
Regimental Headquarters, Headquarters Company, Supply Company, 8th Machine Gun Company and 1st Battalion at Bouryen-Vexin, 2nd Battalion at Courelies. 3rd Battalion at Vandancourt.
June 1st to July 5th, 1918.
Assisted in stopping enemy drive on Paris during first few days of June and assumed the offensive from June 6th, 1918, retaking two kilometers on a two kilometer front, while in this sector.

Aisne-Marne Offensive (Soissons).
July 17th to July 21st, 1918.
Attacked near Soissons advancing 8 kilometers and capturing Chaudun.

Marbache Sector.
(Sub-sector Pont-à-Mousson) August 16th, 1918.

St. Mihiel Offensive.
September 12th to September 16th, 1918.

Meuse-Argonne Offensive (Champagne).
October 1st to October 9th, 1918.
Took part in the capture of Mont Blanc and held ground gained causing the enemy to withdraw to the Aisne River.

Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
November 1st to November 11th 1918.
Attacked near Landres-et-St. George and forced bridgehead across Meuse river north of Beaumont, the night before the Armistice.

March to the Rhine.
November 17th commenced march to the Rhine River passing through Belgium and Luxembourg. Crossed German frontier on December 13th, 1918, taking up front line sector on northern portion of Bridgehead, which the regiment holds at present date.
